Overview
A critical remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2026-1337, CVSS 9.8) was discovered in a widely deployed VPN gateway appliance. This writeup documents the discovery process, proof-of-concept, and recommended mitigations.
Technical Analysis
The vulnerability exists in the authentication handler due to improper input validation of the X-Forwarded-For header. An unauthenticated attacker can craft a malicious request that triggers a stack-based buffer overflow in the underlying C library.
POST /api/v1/auth HTTP/1.1\nHost: target.example.com\nX-Forwarded-For: AAAAAA...<shellcode>\nContent-Type: application/json\n\n{"user":"admin"}
Impact
Full remote code execution as root on the gateway device, allowing network pivoting, credential harvesting, and persistent access.
Remediation
Patch to firmware version 4.2.1 or later. Apply network-level controls to restrict management interface access.
